The Apartment – Tuesday, June 18, 1991

Someone in David’s office had asked him what all our apartment contained. We assumed the normal things would remain. But, we took the RER one more time to look at it more closely. After much sign language with the Gardien, we realized all kitchen cabinets go.

We will have a sink – no stove, no dishwasher. No cabinets in bath, towel racks either. Curtains go. Light fixtures go. At least we know what all we have to buy. Drove out to Gordon and Ann Cardigan’s (an Ex Datapoint boss of mine) for a lovely dinner.

They live outside Paris in Villa Coublay.

Editor’s Notes:

This image was taken about the time they moved in (a few weeks from now). Georgia took so many photos of their apartment when they moved in I had to start showing some of them now.

Thanksgiving – Monday, June 17, 1991

Treated ourselves to a new discovery. An American store called “Thanksgiving”. All U.S. products, run by Americans but not cheap. We had a blast – Picante sauce, A.J. Waffle syrup, etc.

The American Church – Sunday, June 16, 1991

Back to The American Church. They had a visiting choir from the U.S. (children). Went to the Festival du Vent (Festival of the Wind) at La Defense. Watched parasailers on boards on wheels. Anything that had to do with the wind was there.

Editor’s Notes

They visited so many different churches over in Europe but they did enjoy going to The American Church. One thing I remember Georgia doing is having all her music tapes and services mailed over from her church in Texas so they could listen to the service Sunday morning. She would even print out sheet music (hymns) to sing in their apartment.

Day Trip to Reims

Drove to Reims – champagne country. Saw the construction of Euro Disney which is scheduled to open Spring ’92. Visited the Cathedral and the Caves of the Tattinger Champagne makers in Reims.

The caves were built by Monks in the 400 Century A.D. Absolutely magnificent sight to see. We drove back on a back road, taking the scenic route, walked into some vineyards and discovered lots of small towns we would like to re-visit.

Editor’s Notes

Georgia would later take her grandson, Bryan, to Euro Disney on a summer visit. The images below are from their day trip to Reims on June 15, 1991.

Pizza Hut and Dogs

Mom’s Birthday. Treated ourselves to Pizza Hut. As we were about finished, a couple with their dog were seated next to us. It’s a very common practice here.

Dogs go everywhere. Sometimes they even have their own chair in the restaurant. They are extremely well behaved.

Editor’s Note

This was something Georgia always use to tell us when we went to visit. Dogs were not her most favorite animal in the world (for good reason, she was bit when she was a child and had to have rabies shots, back sometimes in the 50′s, not pleasant I’m sure), but she always loved seeing our two dogs.

Laundry Day (yes, she was quick today)

Laundry Day. Not knowing a lot about the laundromats here, I waited for David to come home from work and we both learned to operate the machine with French instructions.

Editor’s Notes

I have a corresponding photo album from 1991 and there are about 10 images for each post, more when she and David went on a trip. I am going to try to include some of these images when she has a shorter post like today.

Cous Cous – Monday, June 10, 1991

Dinner with Dan Hammond (Chairman of the Board of InterVoice) and Holly, Louis Bonnet and Michael Watson at a North African restaurant.  Were introduced to Cous Cous and like it.

Topped off the evening at The Moulon Rouge (a cabaret and place I’ve always wanted to go).  It was great and very, very, very expensive.

American Church – Sunday, June 9, 1991

Walked to the Metro (subway) across the Seine River and made our way to the American Church in downtown Paris. Really like the church. In the afternoon we checked out more thoroughly the town of St. Germain En Laye.

Back to La Defense to a fast food place. Ordered a slice of pizza “to go” and didn’t even think of sitting in their chairs. We now know it is a less expensive price for food “to go” and you don’t sit in their chairs.

This is the start of week two in the France journal. Georgia starting writing in Sunday, June 2, 1991. If you are new to this blog or these journal entries, start with the category, My Life in France, and go to the bottom of the posts and read up. When you get to this post you are all caught up.

La Havre – Saturday, June 8, 1991

Our first drive out of Paris to La Havre (the coast). Many tollways, nice rest areas. Even if you’re driving the speed limit you don’t remain in the left lane – other tend to run over you.

Nice camground in La Havre at the edge of a forest. Beautiful drive all the way. Strolled thru the city and decided to eat. But it’s after 2pm and before 7pm. The restaurant we want to eat at is closed until 7pm. (very common practice in France).

We find a deli and settle for a good ham and cheese sandwich on a croissant.

Club Affairs – Friday, June 7th, 1991

Tonight we met the bartender “Eve” in the bar at Club Affairs. He gave us ideas on one day trips from the city.
