Furniture and Church

Beautiful cello player in church today. More putting together of furniture. But wait, the backs to the cabinets must be nailed on. We have no hammer! Stores are closed today.

David, being intent on putting the furniture together, uses a jelly jar we received on one of our flights and proceeds to hammer away. It’s beginning to look like a house. Lots more clothes to wash. Oh! the bathroom floor is very wet. Obviously the washer is draining on the floor.

Furniture and a Washer Dryer

Back to the 16th district to pick up a washer, dryer, & dishwasher. Only took us an additional 45 minutes of going in circles, not being able to decide where we are on the map and an almost divorce before we found the Taylor’s apartment.

Finally we arrived. Elevator to use this time. Again they all fit in the car. Hooked up the washer and dryer and I washed a couple loads. The instructions are fun and with our French dictionary we managed O.K. Back to IKEA to buy more furniture and exchange the marble.

Editor’s Notes

There were a few photos of the new furniture but none of David hauling back the W&D to their apartment, sorry. This image below is the washer and dryer. I am guessing the dryer is the big thing on the left and the washer is the tiny little thing on the right. The white above the dryer is a cabinet. Looks like you could wash all of two pairs of jeans in this washer.

This next photo is one I love. Georgia would ALWAYS have flowers on her dining room table, and this is no exception. Looks like David is sitting in front of what came in the box, rabbit ears and all.

Tuesday-Friday, July 2-5, 1991

The following are the journal entries for Tuesday through Friday from Georgia Christal. These apparently were short busy days so she didn’t get a chance to write much so they are compiled here into one post. For those who might be new to this blog, please read, About, and also Georgia for a brief explanation of these blog entries.

Kitchen stove delivered today. Enjoyed a good, home cooked meal. Sat on the floor with the TV box as our table but we did have fresh flowers.

Wednesday, July 3, 1991

Waiting for furniture. David brings more flowers, expecting the dining table to be here.

Independence Day! Don’t see any U.S. flags flying high though. Still waiting for the furniture. Finally delivered at 6:30PM. Marble to the dining table was broken. Bed is wonderful!!

Friday, July 5, 1991

Back to IKEA. Return broken marble for new one. Bring it home – it’s too dark. Boxes everywhere in our apartment.

Editor’s Notes

Seems Georgia was quite busy this week so I decided to put a few days entries together in one post. Looks like she had a little more time to write over the weekend so we will pick up there next time.

Recycling & Shower

About 9AM I hear an enormous crashing of glass. It’s not a bad accident; it’s a huge truck emptying the glass recycling bin across the street. What a loud noise! David replaces the shower head in the bath. It was spraying everywhere but on your body.

La Defense

sChecked out a new church in the La Defense area. More convenient to us but didn’t like it enough to go back. Discovered the market in St. Germain. Lots of vegetables, fish, meat, flowers – you name it, it’s here. St. Germain is a beautiful city. A castle in the center, beautiful gardens and a large forest.

Furniture and a Locksmith

Early A.M. to the 16th. district to get our refrigerator and armoire we purchased from an IBM’er leaving Paris. We carry them (using a dolly) down 2 flights of curved stairs. Boy! the car holds a lot. David begins assembling things and I start unpacking.

Dinner at the Buffalo Grill in St. Germain – good food, on the River. But, we’ve locked ourselves out of our apartment! The door automatically locks when you close it and David only had the car keys and I didn’t take my purse.

The Gardien doesn’t answer – must be gone for the weekend. All our windows are shut tight. Kind of a quiet dinner. Return home and knock on our neighbor’s door in the hopes he can speak English. He does. All we can do is call a locksmith. He drills a hole in the door and 570FF later we are inside ($95 USD).

Editor’s Notes

Must have been an interesting time trying to get someone to open a door in English. I love this shot of David with the refrigerator in the back of their car. David, I didn’t think you were supposed to lay a frig on its side? Don’t they have SUV’s over there.

IKEA Store

To the IKEA store again.  The traffic is really heavy.  Motorcycles dash in and out between the cars.  The store is having a Summer celebration sale.  We find the nicest young man to help us.  He directs us to 2 others in Contracts who work with us.

Our dining table and couch are half price and no delivery charge.  So we get busy choosing other items we want.  The car is full with what we can carry.  Other things will be delivered next Wednesday.

Editor’s Notes

This is a photo of their kitchen, new table and chairs.

The Apartment, Move in Time

Big Day. Our apartment is ready. We move all the luggage and boxes. The care sure holds a lot. Might bare apartment. No cabinets to store things in. No chairs. No bed! We are prepared to use our camping mattresses. No refrigerator either.

Our drinks stay fairly cool on the window still outside. They don’t believe in ice here. Out to eat at a restaurant in St. Germain. David orders fried calamari and gets shrimp. I ordered veal since I liked the taste of David’s at the other restaurant, but it was entirely different. Oh, well.

As we enter our apartment, we hear the breaking of glass. It’s a recycling bin across the street on our bedroom side where every day lots of glass bottles are thrown for recycling.

Editor’s Notes:

Georgia had taken so many photos of their apartment and I have said before, I will try to post a few at a time as her journal goes on, but I thought this one was appropriate for how she said their apartment looked when they moved in. Can’t imagine not even having cabinets in the kitchen, but they didn’t.

Paris on Alitalia Airlines

To Paris on Alitalia airlines. Nice weather in Paris after a month of rain every day. We’re ready to move into our apartment. But no, the lady is still living there! So back to the Sofitel for the night.

Ate at a restaurant we discovered earlier, close to our laundromat in the Puteaux area. I ordered Calamari Frite (fried Calamari) and Spaghetti Bolognaise. David ordered veal. He got veal and my calamari (but not fried) and I got my spaghetti. Communication is great.

Editor’s Notes

They did not actually fly on American Airlines but I think she probably saw something she finally recognized, the double “AA” and had to take a photo. The airline they flew on is the yellow in the background.

Iberia and British Airways to Madrid

It’s early up today. 6:30am bus to the airport. Upon arrival at the airport our Iberia flight to Madrid, Spain was canceled. So we stand in line with hundreds of others for the next British Airways flight to Madrid.

Arrived late afternoon in Madrid. It’s hot here – 100 degrees +. Pool atop the Holiday Inn. I sunbathed with the topless ladies. It’s really different to go from “Bonjour” and “Merci” to “Buenos Dias” and “Gracias”. Loved the weather.

Our dinner was lobster at a nice restaurant where we watched them serve fish they had prepared – baked in salt.

Editor’s Notes

I still haven’t actually determined why they took this trip but my guess is it was a business trip that David was on when Georgia was able to go with him, as she did often.

These two photos were taken from the roof top pool of the Holiday Inn, in Madrid Spain. No, she did not take any photos of the other ladies she was sunbathing with, sorry.
