A Drive to the Northeastern Part of France

Saturday, February 1, 1992

This weekend we decided to drive toward the northeastern part of France. We drove thru miles and miles of farm land with many war monuments throughout the land. The weather today was absolutely gorgeous, sunny, and high in the upper 40’s. We explored the city of Verdun, with its old Roman walls, old gates still standing which were part of walls surrounding the city in war times, and its many statues and monuments in tribute to the many war heros. We spent the night in Verdun (intending to stay at a chateau, but they were full) and ate at a very nice French restaurant.

We returned to the hotel, stopped in the bar, and what music do you think they were playing? “The Duck (Chicken), sung in French”.

Paris with Friends for Lunch

Thursday, January 30, 1992

I hosted a luncheon at our home after bible study for the group. A nice turnout and good fellowship for all.

Friday, January 31, 1992

Market day and a luncheon for me in downtown Paris with Iris and Soneda. We hadn’t seen each other since last October. We ate at Suntory’s (a very nice Japanese restaurant) where Iris’ husband is the manager, and found we had lots of things to talk about.

Lunch at the Moroccan Restaurant

Monday, January 27, 1992

After breakfast tacos, David and Don proceeded to work, and Valmae and I purchased French coffee and tea for them to take back, then met the guys for a very nice lunch at a Moroccan restaurant. David proceeds back to work and the three of us visited the “Armee Museum” and the tomb of Napoleon and Josephine. (They’re big on this Napoleon stuff). It was back home for packing and a dash off on the RER to a downtown Paris station. Don and Valmae took the sleeper train to Madrid, Spain, where they would continue on with their vacation.

Visiting the American Church and a visit to Chateau Malmaison

Sunday, January 26, 1992

Attended services at the American Church with an afternoon visit to the Chateau Malmaison in Rueil Malmaison, France. This was the early home of Napoleon Bonaparte and his wife Josephine. Early evening dinner at Louis and Isabelle’s, followed by dancing to French music in their living room. When the “Chicken” dance began to play we felt right at home.

They dance it the same way as we do, except they call it the “Duck”. Lots of fun! Then a trip into Paris to a “Super Bowl” party (the kickoff beginning at 12 midnight here). The game seemed one sided and we were all tired by this time, so at half time we decided to return home.

House Guests from Dallas

Saturday, January 25, 1992

Trip to Orly airport to meet the arrival of our house guests, Don Crosbie of InterVoice Dallas and his wife Valmae. The afternoon was spent with a drive to the champagne country and visiting the cave of Mercier champagne in Epernay. Lunch in a French cafe in Epernay and a drive back home the back road direction thru champagne country.

Luxembourg and My Bible Study

Thursday, January 23, 1992

Early one day trip for David to Luxembourg and my day for Bible Study. In the past I have been driving the car but today David needed to use it. So, it’s 20 degrees this morning and I’m walking to the train. I get on the 8:55 am train. We sit in the station for a while and are not going anywhere. An announcement is made that neither this train nor any others will be going from this station for quite a while. But, we could go out of the train station and they would provide busses to transport us to our destinations.

So, everyone departs the station and stands outside for about 30 minutes and no busses come. A workman comes to the street and announces the train will go as far as Chatou Crosissy and then busses will continue the rest of the way. Aboard the train again and wait. I had to make some quick decisions now. How late did I really want to be? I once more got off the train, went out of the station, and proceeded to get a taxi. The young driver told me the train was not going to go to Paris and stop at Rueil (my destination), so I ran back for the train. (He could have made some money by taking there, but didn’t). The train was still there and so were lots of other people by now. Finally, we depart – it’s 9:50 AM now and I really have no idea how far we’re going.

Well, he did stop at Rueil and I take off to find my bus. And guess who is on the same bus – 3 other BSF students and the lady lecturer. Everyone had problems getting there. Apparently, a gasoline line was leaking somewhere between the town of Rueil and Nanterre, toward Paris. Therefore, trains were neither coming or going for quite a while. I finally reached my destination about 10:20 AM. What a morning.

Drive to Champagne Country

Sunday, January 19, 1992

We knew the sun was teasing us – it’s back to cloudy weather and rain. Early up for breakfast tacos before church, 2 croissants after church and a drive to the Champagne country. The small roads were very scenic, leading us to a Parc Nautique in the middle of nowhere. Just beautiful! Huge lake, beautiful golf course, camping and hotel – truly a place we want to visit in the Summer.
