Over the Loire River and Back Home

Saturday · Popularity: 28% · day trip, my life in france

Sunday, November 10, 1991

Our trip home took us through the back roads crossing the Loire River and passing thru quaint old towns and visiting pre Roman Empire theatres.  We stopped in Ponce, France to visit the glass blowing, pottery and leather shops and even purchased a sugar and creamer at a reasonable price at the pottery mill.

The drive home was again beautiful.

Camping in the Lorie Valley

Friday · Popularity: 33% · day trip, my life in france

Friday, November 8, 1991

Rick’s birthday.  The week has been a relatively normal one - cold days, rain, some sunshine.  Bible Study on Thursday was the best ever.

Saturday, November 9, 1991

David played golf in the AM with Ray Beard and then we departed for camping in the Lorie Valley.  Unusually cold night.  30 degrees F.  We were cozy and warm throughout the night but as we broke ice off the tent the next morning we decided this wasn’t the ideal camping weather.

Driving Back to Paris

Thursday · Popularity: 29% · day trip, my life in france

Sunday, November 3, 1991

Drove back to Paris.  Again, along back roads.  We visited an old, old cathedral and abbey in the town of Verneuil Sur Aire, France, arriving home about 4PM.  We attended the Living Word Church in Le Pecq that evening but decided it wasn’t the church for us.

Headed to Normandy, Western Coast of France

Monday · Popularity: 28% · day trip, my life in france

Saturday, November 2, 1991

After a great breakfast we had to the Normandy area, Western Coast of France, to visit the U.S. Military cemetery at St. James, France.  Approximately 4,000 are buried in this one from World War II - a beautiful memorial.

Farther toward the coast we go on lovely back roads.  France being a very Catholic country, about every 5 miles on the side of the road we saw numerous crosses - sometimes with Christ on them and some very, very old.  In the distance we see Mont St. Michel - a huge old, old monastery built on a tremendous mass of rock into the sea and high into the sky.

As we approach - it is just breathtaking!  Again, so many pictures, we’re taking.  It just stands out so beautifully.  The tide comes in twice a day and surrounds it.  Today the interior has 4 or 5 hotels - lots of shops, restaurants, an abbey, a cemetery - just a city in itself.

We drive up the coast to Cancale, France - a port city with seafood restaurants everywhere along the shoreline.  Beautiful city.  Back to the campground - cooked and ate before the rain came.  Very hard rain in the night.

Camping in the Rain in France

Wednesday · Popularity: 23% · day trip, my life in france

Friday, November 1, 1991

Sun is shining and off we go.  I even drove.  An interesting practice here on “All Souls Day” - Nov. 2 - Chrysanthemums of all colors are brought by truck loads and placed on the graves everywhere, making for very colorful graveyards.

We find our campground at Fougeres, France.  Very nice.  The rain is coming though.  We hurriedly set up our tent and eat dinner as the rain comes and goes.

Lausanne Cathedral, Bern, and Swiss Alps

Thursday · Popularity: 42% · day trip, my life in france

Tuesday, October 8, 1991

David departs for the show and I visited the Lausanne Cathedral (one of the oldest and largest cathedrals, built in the 12th century).

Thursday, October 10, 1991

I took the train North to the city of Bern. The scenery was beautiful but the city was full of Cultist groups.

Friday, October 11, 1991

I ventured on the train to the city of Bex. The train spiraled around Lake Geneva and then entered the beautiful Swiss Alps country. What a breathtaking sight. I loved this small resort town and fully enjoyed the spectacular beauty of its surroundings.

Retuning to Lausanne I stopped at Montreaux at the Chateau de Chillon - a castle built in the 13th. century on a rock on Lake Geneva.

Sleeping Late and a Day Trip

Well, we thought it was 8am when we awoke; but one look at the clock quickly told us it was 11am. David was extremely tired from his tip and me, well, I’m accustomed to sleeping that late. After a great breakfast (12 noon) we ventured to the streets of St. Germain.

I had found a couple of things I wanted to show David before I bought them. Well, we had forgotten - the stores are closed between 12 noon and 2pm. So back home we walked and off in the car to explore more country. Out of St. Germain about to enter the A-13 freeway, a random highway patrol check stopped us.

David was given a breatherlizer test (first in his life) and the officer checked our car over for insurance and proper papers (final papers which David had only received yesterday). These random checks are frequent in this country. We drove South to the town of Val de Reiul.

We saw three beautiful lakes (first we’ve seen so far). Drove to the town of Poses. The lakes stretched between the 2 towns. We explored the old church in Poses and its magnificent commonwealth war graves. Snacked at a nearby restaurant overlooking the lake waters and took side roads back home.

Spotted 2 beautiful church steeples at a town of Evreux. Toured the Cathedral and museum there. Superb display of early life. Stopped at a roadside park to enjoy the pastries we purchased there and returned home. Oh yes, along the way we discovered 2 more campgrounds.

Editor’s Notes

There were several photos from this trip including the lake and several of the churches. Here is the church with the war grave yard and another of where they stopped to have a snack along the lake. Caption on this first images (yes Georgia stuck it to the front of the image) but also on the back that says:
