The Cable Guy

Cable man came today. He spoke zero English and my few French words had nothing to do with the installation of cable TV. Now we have CNN and occasionally a few other English channels.

Editor’s Notes

I remember them trying to watch the Super Bowl (and many other live events from over in the U.S.) on that TV and cable system. They never seemed to know what they were going to get at any given time, and what did show up on TV was a surprise. I think they were actually only allowed one TV as well, you could not hook up additional TV’s at all (nor phones for that matter).

Living Room in France

You can see from the photo above, not only was there only one TV allow, but it was also VERY small. What’s funny about the photo is the chairs and sofa still exist today. The caption on the photo reads:

Furniture and Church

Beautiful cello player in church today. More putting together of furniture. But wait, the backs to the cabinets must be nailed on. We have no hammer! Stores are closed today.

David, being intent on putting the furniture together, uses a jelly jar we received on one of our flights and proceeds to hammer away. It’s beginning to look like a house. Lots more clothes to wash. Oh! the bathroom floor is very wet. Obviously the washer is draining on the floor.

Furniture and a Washer Dryer

Back to the 16th district to pick up a washer, dryer, & dishwasher. Only took us an additional 45 minutes of going in circles, not being able to decide where we are on the map and an almost divorce before we found the Taylor’s apartment.

Finally we arrived. Elevator to use this time. Again they all fit in the car. Hooked up the washer and dryer and I washed a couple loads. The instructions are fun and with our French dictionary we managed O.K. Back to IKEA to buy more furniture and exchange the marble.

Editor’s Notes

There were a few photos of the new furniture but none of David hauling back the W&D to their apartment, sorry. This image below is the washer and dryer. I am guessing the dryer is the big thing on the left and the washer is the tiny little thing on the right. The white above the dryer is a cabinet. Looks like you could wash all of two pairs of jeans in this washer.

This next photo is one I love. Georgia would ALWAYS have flowers on her dining room table, and this is no exception. Looks like David is sitting in front of what came in the box, rabbit ears and all.

Tuesday-Friday, July 2-5, 1991

The following are the journal entries for Tuesday through Friday from Georgia Christal. These apparently were short busy days so she didn’t get a chance to write much so they are compiled here into one post. For those who might be new to this blog, please read, About, and also Georgia for a brief explanation of these blog entries.

Kitchen stove delivered today. Enjoyed a good, home cooked meal. Sat on the floor with the TV box as our table but we did have fresh flowers.

Wednesday, July 3, 1991

Waiting for furniture. David brings more flowers, expecting the dining table to be here.

Independence Day! Don’t see any U.S. flags flying high though. Still waiting for the furniture. Finally delivered at 6:30PM. Marble to the dining table was broken. Bed is wonderful!!

Friday, July 5, 1991

Back to IKEA. Return broken marble for new one. Bring it home - it’s too dark. Boxes everywhere in our apartment.

Editor’s Notes

Seems Georgia was quite busy this week so I decided to put a few days entries together in one post. Looks like she had a little more time to write over the weekend so we will pick up there next time.

Furniture and Locksmith

Early A.M. to the 16th. district to get our refrigerator and armoire we purchased from an IBM’er leaving Paris. We carry them (using a dolly) down 2 flights of curved stairs. Boy! the car holds a lot. David begins assembling things and I start unpacking.

Dinner at the Buffalo Grill in St. Germain - good food, on the River. But, we’ve locked ourselves out of our apartment! The door automatically locks when you close it and David only had the car keys and I didn’t take my purse.

The Gardien doesn’t answer - must be gone for the weekend. All our windows are shut tight. Kind of a quiet dinner. Return home and knock on our neighbor’s door in the hopes he can speak English. He does. All we can do is call a locksmith. He drills a hole in the door and 570FF later we are inside ($95 USD).

Editor’s Notes

Must have been an interesting time trying to get someone to open a door in English. I love this shot of David with the refrigerator in the back of their car. David, I didn’t think you were supposed to lay a frig on its side? Don’t they have SUV’s over there.
